Four hedgehogs are at the feeders while a further two await snuffling in the hedge.  They are big enough to look after themselves.  However small young hedgehogs from the second litter of the season can be in real trouble at this time of year. If they weigh less than 600g when they enter hibernation they will not have the fat reserves to get them through winter and death is a certainty. The usual advice when dealing with wildlife is to leave well alone but this is a situation where the only way to ensure survival is by intervention.

So when we find  a youngster weighing in like this

we feel we must act.  Then we find its sibling

followed by number three

But it was obvious something more was needed.  So tonight they have moved into the spare room

where hopefully bed and breakfast will equip them for the winter ahead.

Meanwhile outside the first two-foot foundation hole is dug for the polytunnel – only 17 more to go.
