After waiting for ages for the perfect conditions, this morning we decided to put the cover on the 40′ polytunnel as we had extra hands available and the wind was less than gale force
all those hands were needed
and the cover was made secure. At which point Spot decided to start collecting large branches in order to make a nest. This seemed more ritualistic than functional as she soon gave up and started pumping out piglets.
Eight arrived at regular intervals over ninety minutes – one was born dead but the other seven were rearing to go.
Then Spot continued straining for another two hours with nothing to show for it. We shuttled the seven between straw box
until at last she expelled the afterbirth and relaxed into a long deep sleep
We are now about to do the same
