The pheasants have also returned from their summer holiday. Having escaped getting shot on the estates they mainly return to get hit on the roads. Usually they are flattened outright but today on our slower lane we meet a badly injured cock. What strikes us is how his two male companions are standing round him, seemingly with empathy and concern. We collect him and send him on his way – broken wing, broken leg and distorted beak, he could not survive
