The Pause of the Pendulum

As the pendulum of light nears its moment of stillness in a few days time

solstice

it is as if all life and action holds its breath, just waiting to get over the hump.

Life is slow

20181216-06

Evidence of time past remains

20181216-01

20181216-03

20181216-05

Signs of the future emerge

20181213-05

The weather hovers between brightly crisp

20181214-10

20181214-08-2

20181214-11

and crisply bright

Some days Dawn

20181214-01-2

and Dusk

20181214-05

seem to almost merge into each other

Some residents are certainly sprucing up for a new start

Down into the Depths

Fourteen days until we hit bottom

solstice

Moments of brightness

20181207-16

are welcomed through the constant drip

20181206-48

Hens hesitate

20181206-11

However the dampness enhances

In the dryness of Polytunnel World pods can crack

We store up the energy

Unboxing the Sheep

Today started with a touch of frost

20181204-16

and the hedgerows ablaze

20181204-14

20181204-02

We had a little time to enjoy the sun

20181204-13

20181204-11

20181204-04

20181204-02-2

As did the neighbouring sheep

20181204-04-2

20181204-06-2

before we had to journey to collect one of their sisters

20181204-15-2

Think this is our box

20181204-22

not all chops actually but also mature mutton mince

Thank you Mr Thomas

Notes from early December

As we enter the darkest of days the equation goes like this:

(daylight time) = (time to do essentials) + (not very much)

also

(time to do essentials) = (constant) x W

where W is Weather factor (wind/rain/low temperatures)

during last year’s worst snow

(daylight time) < (constant) x W

but so far this month W has been low.

A lot of dark skies so when the light does shine through it is savoured

One of the Cayugas developed a limp and had to do a lot of sitting down.

20181202-05-2

She was given her own sitting down place, where she received visitors

20181202-07-2

In a day or two she was standing up

20181201-03

and able to get around again

Perversely, these shortest days are when the ducks start laying again after an Autumn break. Certainly James and Cagney are back in the mood, after a moulting time

It is a spectator sport
